Um pouco dos Balcãs! / A little of the Balkans!

* Keep going down for english! =)

We decided to go from Turkey to Italy by land, thus we spent 5 days in Bulgaria, 2 days in Macedonia and 7 days in Montenegro. The stays were short, since we were passing through but also very interesting!
In Sofia, Bulgaria, we spent the first two days with Veselin and his family. They were incredibly nice, introduced us to a bit of the local culinary and told us many things about the country! We walked through downtown, which had a beautiful and cold winter air. It was about 0 degrees, so we dressed as warm as we could! The trees without leaves, the grayish impressive architecture and streets adorned for Christmas gave it a magical atmosphere!
On the way through the city we found a German Christmas fair! Very talented singers gathered people around attracted by the beautiful Christmas songs. As it was going on outside, we couldn’t stay for long, but going into a cafe and having a cup of tea was wonderful! At the end of the day we dined with Veselin and his family, as we talked about many different subjects. Being there, in Bulgaria, having dinner with a local family was really something. Ah! After dinner we did something that we had not done for a long time: we went to the movie theater! What can be better on a cold winter day?
On another time, Veselin took us to a thermal springs spa, located in a beautiful mountainous region near Sofia. The road was covered with snow, which made the ride scrumptious! We talked a lot about life in Bulgaria and in Brazil, cooked and had fun together. It was all very relaxing!
It was December 24 and Veselin would go traveling to spend Christmas with his family, so we stayed with Polina, Victor and their beautiful 4 year old son named Sasha. We helped Polina to cook during the day and tasted her delights at the end. And what a delight! Another great experience of Bulgarian cuisine, with a Russian touch this time! We enjoyed the very typical Christmas atmosphere and spent the 25th with Polina’s family. We participated in the delicious lunch and watched the gifts exchange. The feeling of living something so familiar in a so far away land is hard to describe!
On a sunny day, we visited a ski resort nearby where we could spot Sofia in the horizon. Quite a spectacle! We had a hot soup, while enjoying the visual. It was fun to have many delicious dinners and nice conversations in the company of Polina and Victor.
We followed the path towards Macedonia, where we stayed only 2 nights in Skopje. Unfortunately we got a very bad weather and could not enjoy it much. The fog was low and the cold made it uncomfortable to be outside. But we still walked through the center and passed some beautiful monuments, including the statue of Alexander the Great!
We then took a bus to Podgorica in Montenegro, where we stayed with Danilo. He and his lovely mother received us very well! The days were beautiful this time and he led us to magnificent mountain hikes. What a beautiful place! The formations, the ruins, the typical Christmas trees and the local wine, how wonderful! At the end of the days we returned to the house, where we dined delicious dishes prepared by his mother.
After that we went to a small town on the coast called Budva. We could see it’s very touristic in the summer, however, it looked like a ghost town during the winter. Exaggerations aside, the city is very charming and beautiful. The stunning mountains of the country ended very near the sea, and the city was located exactly at this small piece of flat land between the hills and the water! Many yachts of all sizes were moored opposite the very well preserved historical center.
Walking through that historical part was awarded with beautiful sunny days and gorgeous views of the Adriatic Sea and its greenish blue waters that contrasted with the rocky mountains near the coast.
The last days in Montenegro included a lot of research and hours in front of the computer planning our next destination, the long awaited and very much expected Italia! =)
