Eu e o Pedro nunca frequentamos igrejas.

Looking for a place to live near the ski resort, where we would work, we contacted a woman who was renting a room. She said that was just looking for a girl for the room, but that Lynn could help us. We called Lynn. She had a room available in her house in Leavenworth-WA, but wouldn`t feel comfortable renting to a couple that wasn`t officially married. However, trying to help, she offered us an apartment downtown. The choice seemed perfect, but we would arrive in town on December 1st 2010 and the apartment would be available only on the 20th. After a few e-mails, Lynn agreed to host us for the first 20 days.
We arrived in town in the beginning of the winter, the snow began to fall and the ski resort opened its doors. Leavenworth, where we would live, is 40 minutes away from the ski resort, we'd catch the employee bus daily. The city is very small, has 2500 people and is beautifully decorated in a German style. In fact, considering the importance of the region that resembles the region of Bavaria in Germany, this style was created in order to attract tourists. In 1950 the city began to be called Bavarian village, the whole architecture has been modified, many festivals have been created and now the tourism sustains the city. I was certainly a good idea. =)
The couple were staying with, Lynn and Chuck, are wonderful people. She is very sweet, always trying to help, her hobby is to make quilts (patch work), very common in the United States, she makes a wonderful job. Chuck works from home with consulting and loves games, which makes it fun, since we are always playing something. Their house is about 1 km from the city center, on the edge of a giant mountain covered with snow during the winter. Both regularly attend church in the city and a few days after our arrival, they took us with them.
Pedro and I have never attended church. Our family isn`t religious, but we are curious to learn about. In fact, my doubts were always numerous when the subject was religion. I always believed in facts and needed evidence to believe in something, but, on the other hand, I couldn`t simply disregard the entire history of religions, even because, if you think about it, I would say that most people, when face a big problem, turn to God (no doubt I would do the same!). So, wouldn`t it be kind of hypocritical to simply say I do not believe? So I can say that, somehow, I always believed. But who is this God? Many believe in God as creator of the universe. As I struggle to discredit the big bang theory, I always thought of God as a major force, related to the nature or even the strength of our thoughts. But I still have a lot to learn.
Well, we went to the church with Chuck and Lynn some Sundays. It is not a catholic church as most in Brazil, it`s name is Church of Nazarene and believe in Jesus Christ. The experience was interesting. They start the morning with a full band, with bass, drums and guitar. The songs are really beautiful and relaxing. In the first meetings, when the pastor began to speak of Jesus Christ, I immediately began to think that when I had time i would look on the Internet for evidences of Jesus existence, so I could believe it. However, during his speech, the pastor was always explaining about the goodness of Jesus and the importance of having the same kindness and love for others in our hearts. I looked around one day and about 100 people there said: Amen. At this point I wondered: Does it really matter ifJesus did existed or not? Those people were there that sunny Sunday listening to a speech that promotes peace and love among human beings. Even if it weren`t true, what could be wrong in believing? This conclusion made me think that, regardless of beliefs, what matters is the love between people and, if the church encourages this type of behavior, it is welcome.
Personally, I've met people attending churches with dubious behaviors and others that never stepped on one with an immense love for others in their hearts and vice versa. It was very clear to me, after this reflection, the importance of not judging people for their beliefs. The word respect fits well here, respect for differences. As long as there is love in their hearts, the fact of believing or not in God or Jesus Christ does not make people better or worse. It is my humble conclusion so far.
Despite reflections, one of the goals of this trip is also learn about different religions and try to understand the arguments that support them. Southeast Asia and Europe will be certain stops and will generate some new points of view.
