Fazendo Acontecer / Making it happen

After the idea, the planning period iniciated. We couldn`t talk about anything else. Some countries would be certain destinations, others chosen during the trip. However, there was a more important issue at the moment, how to financially support this trip?          Our families are not wealthy, happily, I would say. The trip would have to be in a kitsch, as backpackers, carrying few belongings, staying at friends' homes or hostels. It would be a challenge, no doubt, but it seemed entirely possible. After all, we do not need so many things to live, right? Actually, we didn`t know the answer to this question, but certainly we would find out.        Well, even opting for a more accessible style of travel, we would need an amount of money we definitely did not have. Some time would be necessary to accumulating this amount. We could find a good job, work for a year or two without spending much, this would make the trip possible, or not. The question was: After two years in a good job, would we leave everything to travel? Probably not. Letting go the few things we had at the moment seemed already a crazy idea.     Ok, the fact is that we needed to protect us from ourselves and ensure that the trip would be made after the work period. It was then that the idea of doing this outside Brazil came. We could start working temporarily in some countries. Besides knowing better these countries, we wouln`t have the risk of not making the trip, since it would be already happening. In addition, temporary jobs outside Brazil would be very different from what we were used to. A ski resort on winter and rafting during the summer. It would be completely new experiences, which made the idea seem even better.      From this decision, it was possible to think about some initial destinations. We would have to work in countries where you can make money with this type of employment. Considering the easy access through a few Brazilian programs, we thought about America as an initial option.     After much research, Pedro and I decided to work at Stevens Pass, a ski resort located in the  Washington state, during the North American winter. With the first airplane ticket on our hands, the journey began. From now on it would be new facts every day, we couldn`t wait.

A ideia / The idea

I don`t remember when the idea of traveling started or exactly why. Probably because it wasn`t an exact date or a single reason. I think everything starts with some questions about the future. The fact is, I think, that culturally, there is a schedule to be followed during life stages that society imposes and by which all of us must necessarily pass, preferably with no breaks. You finish high school, college starts, finishes up college, starts a job, post graduate school, or any other study or work. Urgent! The next step should happen as quickly as possible, as if we were in some kind of race in which the winner would be the one that could meet the greatest number of steps proposed in the shortest  period of time.
Pedro and I obediently followed the rules expected by society, until we begin to question whether these really were the rules we wanted to follow.
I'm not very close to music. Normally I listen to what comes on the radio, since it has a nice pace for me is ok. But at one point one of them caught my attention. It said: "I have no time to have, free time to be, not having to do anything. Yes, when I find myself lost in things that I created, and I do not know [...] Oh, I wake up to work, I sleep to work, I run to work [...] I do not see beyond the smoke that passes and pollutes the air, I don`t know anything. " Yes, some songs have the power to make us reflect.
Indeed, sometimes it seems that work is not the means but the end of our lives. We do everything to work, we have no free time. And you better run, otherwise our job will suffer in the future. It was that, was exactly that. It was a comforting feeling, it wasn`t only me who thought this way, which reduces the possibility that I'm going crazy. I don`t need to say that I heard that song 50 times that day.
Well, some months passed before we started to feel that we should do something different. Follow the schedule for the rest of the life was something that wasn`t sounding good, not only because of the compulsion, but because of a desire for something more. There were so many things we wanted to do, but none matched the routine of 8 hours a day inside an office. You know that book you never had time to read? You know that trip you never had time to do? We wanted to have time. Time to read, travel, think, be, have, live. We wanted not only to learn about other cultures, but being immersed in them. Taking time to meet, talk, reflect. Yeah, it was sometime in 2010 that, talking about it, we decided to stop everything to know a few countries of the world. What would become our professional lives in the future? We weren`t sure. A trip might not be viewed in a favorably way by employers. But that didn`t seem to bother much. After all, that's not why we live.
