O Charme Francês / The French Charm

* Keep going down for English! =)

Our stop in France was spectacular. The country in general is very charming. The beautiful bakeries, people walking with their baguettes all day long, very well dressed and wearing their scarves, the alluring bistros, many of them, some very simple and cheap, but with all the classic French charm, the meals were elegant, small and delicious. I would say that France is somewhere between the Germany and Switzerland’s super organization and Portugal’s relaxation. Organized in some aspects, not so much in others, a good balance.
Very little English is spoken. In the South it was easier to communicate in Spanish. But in our case, it happened not because people didn’t want to speak English, as many say, but because they did not know it. Everyone was very friendly and very polite at all times.
A funny point we noticed in different countries was the habit of taking their shoes off when entering the house. It was very natural in Asia, still common in Germany and Switzerland, but not used in France and Portugal at all.
We arrived in Toulouse, a reasonable size city. We used the very efficient bicycle system, in which you take it at one place and return at another. The highlight was the visit to the space museum that had a huge planetarium, an IMAX cinema, and many curiosities and simulations.
We took a ride, organized by a French website, where you pay part of the fuel, to our next destination, a beautiful town called Vinon-sur-Verdon, next to a National Park where there is a magnificent canyon with a huge and incredible and very green river passing by. The city was very French, tourists were almost inexistent, people would buy their baguettes in the morning, it was really a village in the country. We had many invitations by couchsurfing people who lived in the area and ended up staying at Jean’s, which was a real experience. We walked around the beautiful area on a stunning sunny day, we talked about life and the things that really matter for us and even today we are still reflecting about these conversations. He has a spectacular point of view that made us feel comfortable regarding our doubts. Being in that peaceful and beautiful place in a so enjoyable company was a big renewal of energies.
And of course, we went to Paris! Despite being a very big and touristic city, which we usually don’t like much, we must agree that Paris is very romantic and charming, as the rest of the country. The Eiffel Tower at night is really a spectacle. And the energy there, with people of all types and places taking many photographs, is really something magical. It is also a city with a great history and fantastic constructions.
We stayed with Lyes, a French man who had lived in Brazil and spoke Portuguese. His flat was very close to the city center in a very nice neighborhood. My grandparents met us there, since my grandmother really wanted to visit the famous Paris. They stayed in an area farther away from the center, which made us often take the subway and see a very different reality from the tourist centers, with much more Parisian real life going on.
Our time in France was short, but very interesting. The country has a very enchanting charm. We are still late on our writing, but soon we will post about our next destination: Ireland! =)
